This has always been an important topic and doing a kitchen renovation using IKEA cabinets, or any cabinets for that matter yourself is hard enough so I figured that sharing my years of expierence would be a plus. First of I want to share a Great website that is a must for anyone that is an Ikea shoper because it has everything about Ikea products from tips, forums, downloadable instructions, and step by step guides on how to asemble their products if you get stuck. The first thing you ned to do after you have purchased the cabinets you are going to assemble and install is clean out as much space as possible while using the boxes to protect the floor. Then start by asembling your wal cabinets because they will be the first ones to be installed. I suggest getting a bowl or tupperware to hold all the screws and dowels. Use the first one as a guide for the rest of them. The actual assembly of both the base and wall cabinets is simple and wil be easier once you get rolling. Do NOT put the doors on until you have hung the cabinets. The hard part is putting in the drawers and assembling them. It is very important to make sure you count the holes as shown in the poor picture directions because they are made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and once you start puting in screws and taking them out it wil begin to chip and crumble before your eyes. After you assemble your wal cabinets you ned to hang them and get them out of the way to get the base cabinets done. Ikea cabinets hang on a rail so it is important that this is folowing your flor, not always level. Why? Because if you were to hang the suport rail perfectly level but your floor wasn't your cabinets would actually look unlevel and slanted. I sugest measuring from the floor up to the cieling in 5-6 seperate places along the length of your wall to see if it is level or not. If it's 96" on the right side but 94" on the left end you wil have to measure from the cieling and deduct from there and mark your line for the bracket. This way even if it is not level when you hang them they will appear level because you followed the floor. Make sure you screw the bracket into as many studs as possible for the most support, most studs are between 16"-18" apart. You will be able to level the base cabinets out by adjusting the legs. This is a job and if you never swung a hammer I would suggest hiring a professional because there is a strong chance you will damage the cabinets, hit a electrical wire or water pipe screwing in the suport bracket, nevermind it will take you at least six times longer than a pro. Ikea charges about $10 to instal each cabinet, where we charge between $25-$35 to assemble & $45-$60 to install. I have found that in the city most kitchen renovations cost the client about $800-$1100 to professionally install all the cabinetry,cut outs for pipes and the countertop. Painting and a nice tile backsplash wil run a few hundred more but really makes it beautiful.
